Jews for Jesus is seeking a full-time Web Developer to join our team in the San Francisco Headquarters office.
Description: The Jews for Jesus website, http://www.jewsforjesus.org, is a cutting-edge web application running on an open source Content Management System (CMS). The site is continually updated with new publication material, multimedia content, and events “to make the Messiahship of Jesus an unavoidable issue to Jewish people worldwide.” The site is maintained by the position of the Web Developer, which is nothing short of a one-person show that entails a great deal of responsibility and freedom.
Applicants for the Web Developer position should have some of the following skill sets, with the ability to learn and grow into all of them:
Qualifications: Programming—a foundational understanding of computer programming is required; Zope and all of the Jews for Jesus specific classes are written in Python, but experience in any similar language would be acceptable (C, Java, Perl, Ruby, ASP, etc); applicants should be able to read and write basic functions that add to the existing framework; any experience with a CMS (especially Zope) would be icing on the cake; Zope uses Document Template Markup Language (DTML); experience with DTML is not required, but applicant should have experience writing and designing templates.
Information Architecture: jewsforjesus.org is a web standards compliant website; applicant must be able to use appropriate semantic mark-up that validates as ‘XHTML transitional’; a style guide has been written, and should be followed to maintain consistency and integrity through the site; an understanding of how document engineering relates to Search Engine Optimization (SEO) is also helpful.
Database Engineering: Zope uses it’s own unobtrusive database system that is easy to maintain; some features of jewsforjesus.org, however, interface with a MySQL database; applicant should have basic MySQL Create, Read, Update and Destroy (CRUD) skills and an understanding of relational database programming.
Designing: To maintain the look and feel of jewsforjesus.org, applicant must be thoroughly versed in Cascading Style Sheets (CSS); experience with Adobe Photoshop and Illustrator is also required.
Multimedia: applicant should feel comfortable working with digital audio, video, PDF documents, Microsoft Powerpoint and Macromedia Flash.
Communication: Applicant should be able to handle feature requests, constructive criticism from users and staff; daily requirements include setting and communicating website goals, staying alert to web trends, and responding to ministry needs.
