In 1868 a rabbi in Philadelphia took exception to a speech by Pennsylvania governor John W. Geary who stated on the occasion of Thanksgiving: “Let us thank Him [God] with Christian humility for health and prosperity,” and Geary also called on Pennsylvanians to pray that “our paths through life may be directed by the example and instructions of the Redeemer, who died that we might enjoy the blessings which temporarily flow therefrom, and eternal life in the world to come.” Click here to read the rabbi’s response (which also reflects today’s concerns in the Jewish community regarding separation of church and state).

Also, Hanukkah begins at sundown on December 20 – more on that next month!
