Traditions can be a way of preserving the memory of a family loved one. Mamala” is my mother-in-law, who passed away last Erev Rosh Hashanah. She always “did up” the holidays top notch, with much gold and silver glitz. She delighted in making things visually appealing and thought-provoking. And when it came to giving gifts, she was a very generous lady.
Mamala remembered a deep-fried cookie she ate as a youngster around Hanukkah time. Unfortunately, she didn’t know the recipe, and so our family attempted to research it on the Internet and through the local library. We believe we’ve re-created a pretty accurate version of what Mamala smelled and tasted as a youngster. This special type of holiday cookie uses a rosette maker, which can be ordered from a local store. They make dreidels, stars of David, etc. If you write to Havurah, I’m sure they’ll send you the details or you can look up web sites that sell cooking supplies.
Our family is creating its own holiday traditions as well. Each night of Hanukkah we light ALL of our menorot, which can be as many as ten! Gifts given each night progress from simple and small, to more elaborate and costly. We recognize that the most costly gift of all is the one that God has given us in the light of truth and redemption that Yeshua offers. This becomes vividly alive in our household beginning each High Holiday season and continues through our Hanukkah celebration.
Tasman Family Rosette Cookies
- 1 cup flour, sifted
- 1 egg
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 cup milk
- a pinch of salt
Mix all ingredients together with a wire whisk until smooth. Follow the directions that come with the rosette maker to make the cookies. Sprinkle cooled rosettes with confectioners’ sugar, cinnamon and sugar, or a cream cheese glaze. Makes about three dozen.
