Is This the End?
Today’s the day—December 21, 2012. The day the world is supposed to end according to the Mayan calendar.
It turns out that the Mayans aren’t the only ones to claim to know when the world will end.
What Others are Saying
Vladimir Putin claims to know: “I do know when the end of the world will happen. In 4.5 billion years as far as I understand the functioning and cycle of our sun.”
On Facebook, you can “like” the pages “I Believe the World Will End When the Cubs Win the World Series!”
“The World Will End When Chuck Norris Says So.” These last three, however, do not seem to have inspired the same kind of mini-panic that the Mayan calendar has.
Besides the Mayans, Putin, and Facebook account holders, there’s a voice that we think should be heard:
The “Yeshua Calendar” (Yeshua is the Jewish way to say Jesus)
OK, that’s a phrase we just made up. But we didn’t make up Yeshua and we didn’t make up the fact that he also had something to say about when the world will end.
Yeshua’ followers asked him, “What will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” (Matthew 24:3) After saying a whole lot of things that happen before the end of the world, Yeshua concluded with, “and then the end will come.” (Matthew 24:14)
But the Yeshua Calendar doesn’t pin down a date. “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” (Matthew 24:36)
So if the Yeshua Calendar doesn’t give a date, who cares? So what? What’s the point?
Yeshua added this part, speaking to his followers
“Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your Lord will come. But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what time of night the thief was coming, he would have kept watch and would not have let his house be broken into. So you also must be ready, because the Son of Man will come at an hour when you do not expect him.” (Matthew 24:42-44)
But it’s not just followers of Yeshua who need to get ready, but everybody: “For he has set a day when he will judge the world with justice by the man he has appointed. He has given proof of this to all men by raising him from the dead.” (Acts 17:31)
Yes, the world will end when Yeshua returns. And that means the time is now to get ready by trusting in him to save you from your sins and in that way be saved from the end of the world.
