The Academy Awards are scheduled for Feb. 22. It’s an extravaganza of glitz, glamour and vicarious living.

It’s the yearly idol parade on the famous red carpet where actors show off their fashion, give their two-minute interviews and pose in front of a zillion clicking cameras.

Let’s face it – even cynics like me like to watch the show.

The Academy Awards reminds me of what the Apostle Paul said in 1 Corinthians 9:25, “Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath…” In a similar fashion, every female celebrity has been on a diet and exercise regime to be able to pour herself into a designer gown. Then she’s molded and sculpted in layers of shimmering silk and lace, coiffed in a thousand dollar do, and jeweled in European gems. And for what? To be seen, loved and adored. And maybe win an Oscar.

Just like Roman athletes put themselves through intense discipline to win a perishable laurel wreath, the lucky movie star winners, after starving themselves, go home with a thirteen inch tall statue made of pewter and covered in layers of copper, nickel, silver and 24-karat gold. After the shock and the congratulations wear off, the coveted statue ends up in a glass cabinet as just one more ornament.

What draws people to become actors and what draws us to watch them?
I think deep down we want to be known and loved. We crave the attention of the universe, but we settle for a fan club.

God knows how we feel. That craving is spiritual and only He can fill it. We were made for a higher purpose – to be loved by Him. Your biggest need, and mine, is to be restored to a relationship with Him. Our lives are meant to be shaped not by fleeting moments of celebrity stardom but by an eternity of love to Him.

“The Lord your God is in your midst,
A mighty one who will save;
He will rejoice over you with gladness;
He will quiet you by his love;
He will exult over you with loud singing.”
– Zephaniah 3:17 ESV

God, through his Son Yeshua (Jesus), walked the red carpet of his blood on the cross for us so we could come back to Him. God so approved of His Son’s sacrifice that He resurrected him from the dead, declaring to the world a full pardon to anyone who believes and puts his faith in Yeshua.

You want to be known? Come to Jesus, give him your life, and then go out and represent him to a world that’s craving for what you’ve found.
