From Tel Aviv

Dan Sered, leader of Jews for Jesus in Israel reports, “Here in Israel we have concluded a historic summer. Never before have so many people taken to the streets to demonstrate their disappointment over the high prices of real estate and the high cost of living in general. We seized this opportunity to write a gospel tract inviting people to live eternally in a special place that God is preparing for them if only they will trust in Jesus the Messiah.

“Week after week we’ve gone to the different areas – in Tel Aviv and elsewhere around the country – where people have been demonstrating and camping out in tents. It’s been an opportunity to talk with so many about the justice that is available for them in Yeshua. After an outreach in Be’er Sheva a woman called the office, said she received our tract and that she wants to have what the tract talks about. Sarah (one of our missionaries) explained the gospel to her and offered to send her a free copy of the New Testament. The woman agreed. Pray that she would come to faith.

“On Saturday, September 4, this nationwide protest concluded with a country-wide demonstration. 450,000 people went out to the streets of Israel in cities all over the nation. The biggest rally was in Tel Aviv, where 300,000 people demonstrated in Kikar HaMedinah (literally meaning “the country’s square”). Our Jews for Jesus Israel branch had a team of sixteen people and we handed out 7,200 gospel tracts – and also received contact information from three Israelis who want to know more about Jesus. It was good to be out there, not only to identify with the people of Israel saying that, yes we are concerned about social justice, but mainly to tell our people that Messiah has come and His name is Yeshua.”

From Odessa

As mentioned, Jews for Jesus staff throughout the former Soviet Union have gathered in Odessa to celebrate our twenty years of ministry there with an evangelistic campaign. The three-week outreach began September 12, and on the first day, campaigners prayed with three Jews and four Gentiles to receive Jesus! Also that day, 22 staff and volunteers handed out 23,230 broadside tracts, and received contact information from 37 seekers willing to hear more about Jesus. Fifteen of those seekers are Jewish. What a blessed first day!  Please keep the campaign in prayer and be sure to look for a full report in next month’s RealTime.

Remembering 9/11

From New York City
Ten years ago, our missionaries in New York City were ministering to people on the streets after the devastation of 9/11. Besides giving blood and handing out gospel literature, our staff and volunteers offered comfort, listening ears, and prayer for those whose distress was so apparent. On the anniversary of 9/11 our staff once again took to the streets with a message of comfort and hope. See photos and the message they distributed below.

A message to New York

Ten years have passed since the attacks of September 11 shook our country. For many of us, life will never again be the same. Our sense of safety and security has been threatened. We have come to recognize in a very real way that our world is not a safe place, and that evil does exist.

Even those with the power to make peace and not war can feel this loss of safety and security.  Kings, presidents, ambassadors and spiritual leaders are often hunted or treated unjustly.  In the Bible we read about King David, who was a man well acquainted with war and evil.  He had many enemies who sought to kill him. Yet in the midst of it all, he could confess:

The LORD is my light and my salvation – whom shall I fear?
The LORD is the stronghold of my life – of whom shall I be afraid?
…Though an army besiege me, my heart will not fear;
though war break out against me, even then will I be confident (Psalm 27:1,3).

WE HOPE THAT THIS ANCIENT KING’S WORDS ENCOURAGE YOU…BUT THERE’S MORE:

He who dwells in the shelter of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
I will say of the LORD, ‘He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust…
He will cover you with his feathers, and under his wings you will find refuge…
You will not fear the terror of night, nor the arrow that flies by day, nor the pestilence that stalks in the darkness, nor the plague that destroys at midday. (Psalm 91: 1-2, 4-6)

King David could find rest in the midst of trouble because of his relationship with God.  That can be as true for you today as it was for David, through a relationship with Yeshua (Jesus), the Son of God, our Jewish Messiah.  Nearly 2,000 years ago, Yeshua offered that same rest to the troubled people of His day:

“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.
Take my yoke upon you and learn from me,
for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls.
For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:28-30)

If you need rest in the midst of difficulties today, Jesus is still the answer. And if we can help you come to know Him, please call or write:

From Washington, D.C.

The D.C. staff made a special banner for 9/11 that read: “Did Ancient Hebrew Prophets Speak of Our Days?” On the banner was a QR code that, when scanned, takes a person to this article that reflects on that question. The team considered holding the banner in front of the White House, but instead decided to go to the Nationals baseball game, where the crowd would be much larger and the likelihood of Jewish people being present would be greater.

Many Jewish people did see the banner. Some walked by, muttering “No,” under their breath while others did their best to ignore us, and a few took photos of the QR symbol. One Jewish man, Bob, stopped and in Hebrew asked our branch leader, Stephen, whether or not he spoke Hebrew. Bob didn’t know that Stephen oversees our work in Israel and is fully conversant in Hebrew! A lively conversation ensued and by the end they exchanged their contact information. That night, Stephen emailed Bob, who responded the next morning, saying he’d be happy to meet and continue the conversation about whether the Hebrew prophets spoke of Jesus. It was the branch’s first experiment with a QR symbol on a banner and they look forward to trying something similar in the future. Please pray for Bob’s salvation.
