Jews for Jesus has always been up front about taking our message out to the streets. But some of the most rewarding parts of what we do are behind the scenes. For example, we reach out to Jewish people referred to us by their Christian friends. We usually send a letter and follow up with a phone call.
We never know how a person will feel about getting that letter and phone call. Some are angry, or skeptical or just not interested. But others want to hear more. Lyn Bond from our San Francisco branch thought she’d heard just about every response in the book but was taken completely by surprise when she called Jane in Michigan and heard:
“Thank you so much for caring enough to send me that letter and for calling me!”
Jane explained that she had converted to Judaism decades ago in order to marry her husband. She raised all four of her children as Jews, and now has several grandchildren.
Jane also has cancer. “I wish that I knew that I was going to be in eternity with God,” she told Lyn.
Lyn responded, “There is a way you can be sure—“ But before she could finish, Jane said,
“I know, I need to give my life to Jesus.” She had not forgotten her Christian upbringing!
“Yes,” Lyn agreed. “Is there a reason why you can’t do that now?”
Jane didn’t feel that she could, but could not say why.
Lyn encouraged Jane to talk to God about it. “I’m going to pray for you, that you’ll figure it out and be able to trust Jesus. I’ll call back in a week or so if that’s okay.”
When Lyn called back, Jane thanked her again for the call. Lyn reminded Jane of their conversation. “Were you able to figure out what is preventing you from receiving Jesus?”
“Since I talked to you, I’ve been praying to Jesus every day and He is now in my life!”
Lyn is keeping in touch with Jane to help her grow in her new faith. She’s also looking to put her in touch with other Jewish believers in Jesus who live in her area.
Please pray for Jane, for her physical and spiritual health, for God’s comfort and grace, and the courage to tell Jewish family members that she has entrusted her life to Yeshua (Jesus).
Isn’t it great that someone who cares for Jane put us in contact with her? You never know when someone is ready to receive the good news, but it’s always worth reaching out.
