The billboard company eventually did succumb to pressure to take the advertisements down, but not until they had already been up for two weeks. We actually only lost a day and a half of exposure, and that was more than compensated by the press the billboard received. For example, the August 1 edition of the London Jewish Chronicle printed an article titled, “Calls to ban ‘offensive’ ad,” which featured a full color photograph of the billboard, including the phone number for inquirers to call. Through the Jewish Telegraphic Agency who picked up the publicity, the billboard could be seen in newspapers all over the world, including Israel, South Africa and the United States. As a result of the controversy, the London Jews for Jesus office received many calls from Jewish believers who had previously not openly identified themselves, as well as Jewish seekers wanting to know more about why we believe in Jesus.
