This month we are holding our Behold Your God outreach in Portland, Oregon, with training for this campaign from May 30 through June 1, and the actual campaign running from June 3-15. Training includes how to distribute evangelistic literature and engage people in conversation, basic street apologetics, how to conduct evangelistic surveys and how to make phone calls to possible Jewish seekers in the greater Portland area.
Portland’s Jewish population (normally 25,000) should swell for the first week of the campaign as visitors from all over the state come in for the annual Rose Festival. The festival events will culminate with a big parade on Saturday, June 8.
Behold Your God Portland will include the following types of outreach:
Daily distribution of broadsides (gospel tracts) including some specially written for Portland: one with a duck theme, another about the bridges of Portland and of course one on the rose” theme.
Music—we have put together a little “band” of talented musicians who we hope will attract crowds to hear Jewish Jesus-centered music and story.
Mall evangelism—our “Messiah’s Mall Team” will make good use of a kiosk we’ve leased at one of the popular Portland malls for the entire two weeks. The team will be mainly students, who have shown eagerness to be part of this effort. After all, who knows malls better than the 16-20 year old set?
Campus ministry—with Portland State University just a few blocks from our campaign headquarters, we will interact with students throughout the first week of the campaign. (The second week is finals week.)
Survivor Stories—we’ve scheduled a downtown showing of this video (testimonies of Holocaust survivors who came to faith in Jesus) in a major secular venue. This is scheduled for the second week of the campaign and we are encouraging Christians in the area to invite their Jewish friends.
Phoning—during the evenings we’ll be calling Jewish people who might be interested in hearing more about Jesus.
Visits—we’ve set up “co-visits” so our experienced missionaries and trained volunteers can accompany Christians on evangelistic visits with their Jewish friends and co-workers in the Portland area.
Follow-up—many congregations, both mainstream and messianic, will be praying, participating and following up with the many (we hope) Jews and Gentiles who will come to know our Messiah Jesus.
