An Important Word from Our Board Chair, Dr. Jim Congdon…
Because your trust is important to us, I wanted to communicate directly regarding an unprecedented situation. At our regular meeting on June 18, the Jews for Jesus board of directors voted to retain David Brickner as executive director — despite an impending divorce by his wife of 30 years. Rest assured, this was no hasty decision by the board.
The Bible tells us that God hates divorce. According to our worker’s covenant, David offered his resignation in March, after his wife informed him of her intent to dissolve the marriage against his strong wish to remain together. The board chose to postpone accepting or rejecting his resignation, as organizational policy states that a staff member may remain, when a believing partner was abandoned in the marriage or divorced against his or her will.” Instead, we appointed a committee to conduct an internal review to ascertain the facts of the situation and needs of all involved, putting into motion a rigorous process to seek God’s will for our ministry.
After a careful review, the board determined that David Brickner did everything he could to save his marriage — including going immediately to his pastor, seeking marital counseling, and even offering to leave the ministry — all to no avail. This was confirmed by his wife Patti, who also attested to the fact that David has been a good and loving husband and wonderful father and is not to blame for the circumstances surrounding her decision, which do not reflect on his character or treatment of her.
The board is confident in our decision that David is still God’s man and the best person to meet the needs and biblical imperatives for his unique position. We stand beside him in unanimous support of his calling to continue leading Jews for Jesus, as he has so capably done for the past 14 years. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Brickners at this time. David is currently one month into a two-month leave of absence to devote more time to personal matters.
The Bible is full of stories of people who overcame personal setbacks to accomplish great things for Christ. We are convinced that this will be the case with David.
The Jews for Jesus family remains determined to move forward in the work of Jewish evangelism. Please pray for our ministry as we continue a mission that is challenging in the best of times. With your prayers, support and understanding, we feel we just might be on the verge of a great breakthrough for the cause of Christ.
