Unconditional Love (A Word Study)

1. Charity never faileth.
Fail — ekpiptei (Greek)
to fall off or away” — Young’s
“to lose or become inefficient, have no effect” — Strong’s
(doesn’t die out)

2. Does not behave unseemly
Unseemly — aschemonei (Greek)
“behave disgracefully, discourteously” — Young’s
“is not rude” — NIV

3. Thinketh no evil
Evil — kakon (Greek)
simply means evil, bad
“reckons not evil” — Greek interlinear
“keeps no record of wrongs” — NIV

4. Beareth all things
Beareth — stego (Greek)
“to cover closely, endure” — Young’s
“to roof over, to cover with silence” (endure patiently) — Strong’s
“always protects” — NIV

5. Believeth all things
Believeth — pisteuo (Greek)
“to adhere to, trust, rely on” — Young’s
“to have faith (in, upon, or with respect to a person or thing)” — Strong’s
“always trusts” — NIV

6. Endureth all things
Endureth — hupomenei (Greek)
“to remain under” — Young’s
“to stay under, remain, have fortitude, persevere” — Strong’s

7. Charity — agape (Greek)

Dictionary of N.T. Theology says of agape (pp. 543-546):

  • in Greek literature it denotes a generous move by one for the sake of another.
  • is the word used in nearly every case in the NT to speak of God’s relationship with man.
  • is an “electing love,” a love you choose to do (not always feel like doing).
  • love for God and love for one’s neighbor derive from God’s own love.
  • when I am ‘in Christ’…this love has taken hold of me and is making me…into a loving person.

The International Standard Bible Encyclopedia (pp. 1932 & 33):

  • a clear determination of will and judgment.
  • whatever love there is in man…has its source in God.

Verses on love:

1 Peter 4:8 — “And above all things have fervent love among yourselves; for love shall cover the multitude of sins.”

Romans 12:9 — “Let love be without hypocrisy.” (love must be sincere — NIV)

Romans 13:10 — “Love worketh no ill to its neighbor; therefore, love is the fulfilling of the law.”

1 John 4:18 — “…perfect love casteth out fear.…”

John 15:13 — “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”

Galatians 5:13 — “…use not liberty for an occasion to the flesh, but by love serve one another.”

Matthew 5:44 — “…Love your enemies.…”

Matthew 19:19 — “…Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself.…”

1 Peter 1:22 — “…love one another with a pure heart fervently.”
