Budapest: open hearts at opening event

“Really? An exhibition with an opening event? For free? And we don’t have to buy anything?” According to Bogi Kozma,* this is how people on the street responded as they received leaflets inviting them to come to the opening of this year’s “Multitudes” exhibition in Budapest.

The venue was a small café where we set up 40 or so chairs, most of which were filled as the event began. Some guests were believers, some seekers we’ve been meeting with, and then there were those who came in response to the leaflets. We featured Monique Klongtruadroke who sang a beautiful soprano aria from Bach and then a traditional Jewish song.  Kata Tar introduced the “Multitudes” paintings, which depict vignettes from the Gospel of Mathew in a very Jewish style. It’s a great way to present the gospel.

After the opening no one was in a hurry to leave. People walked around the room, enjoying the paintings and reading the legends next to each. The legends presented the Bible verses that inspired the artist, Steffi Rubin, as well as her comments. As guests immersed themselves in the Gospel of Matthew, they enjoyed refreshments and many conversations with our Jews for Jesus Budapest team.

Bogi says, “We had good talks about the life and teachings of Jesus, and about the reality of Jesus in our lives today. We discussed Him not only as an important figure in art history but an important person today, because through Him we can have redemption. It was an afternoon for conversations, for telling the good news through art and music, and for showing that Jewish life and culture doesn’t end when a person decides to believe in Jesus.”
