I wrote this the day after a young man, 28-years old, and a colleague of mine from work, died of lung cancer complications. He fought a hard fight with chemo and radiation, but in the end his lungs gave out. He was buried last Sunday and his memorial service is tomorrow, and I can’t help but ponder on the very real questions, “What is death like? What do you feel when you leave your body and cross over to where Jesus lives? Does it hurt? Do you see anything with your internal sight? Do you see that all of God’s promises are true?”
These and many more questions come to mind, but however many there are, one thing is certain: nobody can answer them. My colleague isn’t going to appear in my office to tell me his experience of what it was like to die.
Only one Person can tell me, and that’s Yeshua (Jesus) himself.
He was the first to die and three days afterwards rise from the dead. And according to the Scriptures, he showed himself to a lot of people, so we have the story of many witnesses to that fact.
“He presented himself alive to them after his suffering by many proofs, appearing to them during forty days and speaking about the Kingdom of God.” – Acts 1:3 ESV
God promises to meet us in our death and take us into his life.
“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. Whosoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?'” – John 11:25 ESV
God promises to never leave us or abandon us in life or in death. “I will never leave you or forsake you.” – Hebrews 13:5 ESV
God promises to take care of us and nurture us as a Father in this life, and lovingly guide us when it’s time to go home.
This he did for my young colleague last night and I have the confidence in Yeshua he will do it for me when my time comes.
Not because I’m so great, but because God is so great!
Won’t you take that step of faith and put yourself into the hands of a God who promises to take care of you now and forever?
You can have that confidence right now.
